When Atys was performed before the court for the first time in 1676, Lully was at the height of his success: his Tragedie lyrique became the "opera of the king", such was the monarch's appreciation of its quality. The music unfolds into an embodiment of human passions and divine will. With Atys, Lully elevates love to the central theme of the drama and weaves a drama around this overwhelming passion in which the emotions of the heart, divine jealousy and human faults intertwine to seal the fate of the heroes. Leonardo García-Alarcón conducts this new version with exquisite finesse.
