Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was unable to complete his last opera, and the finale with the all-important duet of the two protagonists of "Turandot" exists only as drafts that he left behind when he died suddenly of a heart attack. In performance practice, a completion of the work by Franco Alfano, a student of the composer, has prevailed. This version is also used in the magnificent production at the Vienna State Opera conducted by Lorin Maazel in 1983. With Eva Marton in the title role and the young José Carreras as Calaf, this production is almost an operatic history document. Director Harold Prince - aided by an emblematic set and imaginative costumes - avoided all the usual clichés in this exotic fairy tale narrative and directed the focus to the interaction between the characters in a tragic battle of the sexes. The premiere audience thanked him with ovations lasting three quarters of an hour, which were as much for the conductor as for the wonderful singer-actors.
Reviews
orpheus 4/85: "This is total enjoyment! Lorin Maazel concentrates the Orchestral sound to lushness, revels in the Intoxication of tonal sensuality. Eva Marton the extraordinary soprano who has the appropriate steel in her voice, as well as an overwhelming volume volume, which combines excellently with the distinctive femininity timbre - a Turandot that inspires Turandot, who inspires."
