Trénet, the "fou chantant," as his countrymen affectionately call him, grew up on the Mediterranean and wrote his declaration of love for the azure waters of his southern French homeland as a teenager. "La mer" has been covered countless times and used as film music. Among the most famous versions are Benny Goodman's "Beyond the Sea" and Robbie Williams' musical contribution to "Finding Nemo"

In recordings from 1934 to 1959, this compilation traces Charles Trénet's success story. Included are other companions of the chansonnier, including his duo partner from the early years, Johnny Hess, Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France, Benny Goodman, Juliette Greco, Fréhel, Guylaine Guy and Michel Legrand.
