A first-ever complete recordingfor keyboard collections whichcapture the elegance and cosmopolitanstyle of Georgian-era Englishmusic. Maurice Greene (1696-1755)belongs to the generation thatfollowed Henry Purcell (1659-1695)and preceded Handel (1685-1759).Becoming organist of St Paul’sCathedral in 1719, and in 1735organist and composer to the ChapelRoyal, he wrote a good deal of churchmusic which is still in use today:memorably simple but effectiveanthems such as Thou visitest theearth and Lord, let me know mineend. Much less well known – andmost of it previously unrecorded –is Greene’s corpus of instrumentalmusic. Published in 1745, his SixOvertures in Seven Parts alternate aslow and solemn French-style overturewith fugal Allegros and elegantdance movements such as Minuets,Gavottes or Airs. The original orchestral scores haverecently attracted a recording:Fernando De Luca has made hisown arrangements for solo harpsichord, following a long-standingpractice and retaining the essentialexuberance of the Overtures whileinflecting them with refineddynamic shading.Rarer still are the 15 keyboard‘Lessons’: Italianate suites whichbear witness to a transition fromthe contrapuntal Baroque style toa more Galant idiom, under theinfluence of Italian exemplars suchas Corelli and Geminiani, as wellas the seductive charms of Frenchculture which captivated the upperend of Georgian culture and society.William Boyce (1711-1779) studiedwith Greene and followed in thefootsteps of his teacher by attainingthe same distinguished posts at StPaul’s and the Chapel Royal.
Again principally known for hischurch music, he also wrote acollection of overtures whichhave retained popularity on thefringes of the catalogue. HisVoluntaries for the Organ orHarpsichord (published posthumously, in London, c.1779)represent one of the final greatexpressions of the genre in theirrefined counterpoint and gracefulharmonies.‘Harpsichordist Fernando De Lucadoes a splendid job,’ remarked theFanfare magazine reviewer of theBrilliant Classics album dedicatedto the music of Pierre-ClaudeFoucquet: one of many comprehensivecollections through whichDe Luca has revived lesser knowncomposers of the 18th century. This volume of Boyce and Greenestands as a notable addition to thelibrary.
