Joseph Haydn's piano trios were intended for domestic use, but the composer was inventive in subverting expected norms by introducing striking changes of mood, the use of unusual keys and rich ornamentation into the supposedly tranquil world of the trio. Haydn also had a fondness for dance patterns, as his use of the polonaise on this album shows, and he took advantage of the technical skills of his pianist Maria Theresa, née Hohenfeld, widow of Prince Esterházy, in Trio No. 20 in B flat major. The trios are played by the three first prize winners of the prestigious Enescu Competition (Bucharest, 2014), offering a fusion of historical understanding and romantic sensibility that opens up a new perspective on Haydn. Violinist Stefan Tarara is active both as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles. His performances regularly take him to major festivals and concert halls around the world, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Salzburg Festival and the Tonhalle Zurich. Cellist Eun-Sun Hong has performed with many international orchestras, including the Orchestra Filarmonica della Fenice, the George Enescu Philharmonic and the Russian and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestras. She has performed in famous concert halls such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Musikverein Vienna, the Wigmore Hall, the Romanian Athenaeum and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. The pianist, composer and conductor Josu de Solaun is one of today's leading young pianists and has already performed with many international orchestras and conductors.
