Bernette Epstein, born in Boston in 1920, was of Russian descent. When she was six years old, her family moved to Brazil. Claudio Arrau and Arthur Rubinstein became her mentors, and in 1949 she made her debut as a pianist in New York Town Hall, where she was acclaimed for her beautiful tone. This was followed by her European debut in Paris in 1955 with Heitor Villa-Lobos on the podium.
Bernette also developed great talents as a teacher; in 1972 she took up a professorship at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg, where she remained for over 20 years. When this 1969 recording (her only one for Deutsche Grammophon) was pressed on LP, three preludes had to be omitted for reasons of space, as DG did not want to release a double LP. They have now been reinstated, so that the recording from that time appears here in its entirety for the first time.
