If Bach had only written the Mass in B minor, he would be considered the leading composer of sacred Baroque music. The great mass, composed between 1733 and 1749, is a musical testament for posterity: it is a complete synthesis of the aesthetics that Bach mastered to perfection, but also an anthology of his sacred work with its perfectly mastered architecture. John Eliot Gardiner interprets this pinnacle of European music, which he has been working on for half a century, with impressive energy. The Monteverdi Choir delivers an outstanding musical performance. This event, filmed in the Chapelle Royale of the Palace of Versailles, beautifully captures the splendor and dignity of this masterpiece of sacred art.
