Billie Holiday didn't write "Strange Fruit," but her voice made it the song it is today. Holiday recorded it for the first time on this day in 1939, less than a month after she performed it for the first time at New York's famous Café Society club. Since then, it has become both a classic and a warning: a voice from history addressing the very real and extremely violent horrors of systemic racism.
