Convincing all round"Jonas Kaufmann sings stunningly well" was the Guardian's verdict after the premiere of Puccini's Manon Lescaut in the long-awaited new production at London's Covent Garden Opera. Kaufmann completely convinced the audience and critics in the role of Des Grieux and was enthusiastically celebrated, as was Kristine Opolais, who sang Manon in an enchanting and versatile manner. "Two of the best singers of today, at the height of their ability" praised the critics. Christopher Maltmann gave the Lescaut in the right mixture of charm and also Maurizo Muraro was praised for the Geronte. Conductor Antonio Pappano was certainly also decisive for the musical success, driving the orchestra to top form and once again proving that he is one of the best Puccini conductors of these days. It was directed by Jonathan Kent, who moved the plot to the present day.
