The Salzburg Marionette Theater and the neighboring Landestheater jointly faced a mammoth task: Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" was to be shrunk, from 16 hours to a compact two. At the same time, the tetralogy was not to suffer any lack of content; on the contrary, the version was to provide a common thread through the four operas.
