The Viennese composer, conductor and pianist Wilhelm Grosz was a musician of remarkable versatility and far-reaching influence. Even as a young composer, he earned critical praise for his technically demanding Symphonic Variations on an original theme, which were praised as a 'dramatic tone poem that unfolds to symphonic grandeur - on just one instrument'. The 'Little Sonata' is characterized bygreat depth and clarity of expression, while the waltz transcriptions picked up on the Johann Strauss Son boom in London in the 1930s. The highly original "Drei Stucke" were rediscovered shortly before this recording.
