Founded in 1977, the Ensemble für frühe Musik Augsburg was one of the first medieval ensembles and played a key role in the revival of medieval music. Over the decades, it has released a total of 15 CDs on the Christophorus label, which are now available for the first time as a box set.
The box set sheds light on many areas and aspects of medieval music. Topics include the music of troubadours, trouvères and minstrels, with a particular focus on the German-speaking world, as well as sacred music in connection with the Way of St. James, Hildegard of Bingen and Christmas in the Middle Ages.
The recordings of the Ensemble für frühe Musik Augsburg combine a thorough musicological basis with great enthusiasm, without resorting to gimmicky flourishes. All members sing and/or play several instruments, which guarantees a wide variety of sounds. With this diversity, this 15-CD box set offers a compendium of medieval music that is unique in its form.
