Charles-Marie Widor composed incidental music, vocal music, orchestral works, chamber pieces and - for which he is best known - organ music. When a composer's primary form of expression is the king of instruments, his reputation can take on a certain austerity, and this is probably the case with the popular view of Widor, for hardly any composer is simultaneously so famous and so unknown. The piano works reveal aspects of Widor's art that are less present in his seminal cycle of ten organ symphonies, which carry the weight of his considerable intellect and erudition; in writing for piano, Widor seems able to explore other, more imaginative aspects of his nature. Our understanding of this great composer is enriched as a result. Pianist Daniel Grimwood has attempted to select works that represent the wide variety of styles in Widor's solo piano music. Daniel Grimwood is known for the virtuoso piano repertoire of the 19th century. Grimwood's recordings and performances of the music of Adolph von Henselt have been praised by the press. His recording of Henselt's complete etudes was named an 'Instant Classic' by Gramophone Magazine and named Piano Release of the Year 2023.
