Often called "The Little Giant" because of his small stature and powerful playing, the career of American tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin began in the early 1940s. His first album as a leader was released on Blue Note: the 1956 "Introducing Johnny Griffin".Throughout his 60-year career, he was prolific in recording, both as a bandleader and for Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Max Roach and many other jazz giants. A pioneer of hard bop, Griffi was continuously active until his death in 2008. This album presents one of Griffin's lesser-known studio sessions, recorded in Florida in the 80s. It features pianist Michael Weiss, bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Kenny Washington. Among the various highlights is certainly Griffin's bluesy title track, "Woe Is Me", perfect for long, lonely nights.
