These works are monuments of Expressionism and Romanticism, but they are already at a turning point. The harmonic tension is pushed to the extreme, and the dissonances are daring, though always justified by the expression. The pianist Beatrice Berrut has accomplished a colossal task in transcribing and paraphrasing for keyboard these four works, originally conceived for symphony orchestra or string sextet.
