The gemshorn is a medieval wind instrument from the ocarina family, traditionally made from the horn of a chamois, goat or ox. It produces sounds via a mouthpiece similar to that of a recorder, with finger holes at the front that allow a diatonic scale to be played. The gentle, flute-like sound of the gemshorn - soft and haunting - made it particularly suitable for sacred and secular music in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This new recording presents the gemshorn in combination with lute and percussion instruments in dances from the 12th to 17th centuries. An extremely attractive program that ranges from melancholy reveries to instinctive, sometimes barbaric dances. With music by Alfonso X. "el Sabio", Pierre Attaingnant, Tielman Susato, Thoinot Arbeau, Claude Gervais, Etienne Du Tertre, Jaques Moderne and John Playford.
