About 400 years separate the Second Booke of Songs or Ayres by John Dowland and the Song Books by John Cage; both unite pieces of great expressive sobriety. With the songs for two voices and lute selected here, Dowland wrote intimate three-way conversations; Cage's seeming simplicity, which sometimes borders on the jocular, conceals a concentration on the essential elements of music, including silence. Thélème, here as a trio, integrates the famous singer Sting, with whom it shares a fondness for lute songs, into its program. He interprets his song "Shape of My Heart" in a Renaissance arrangement by the ensemble.
