Lecons pour la Semaine Sainte
Eugenie Lefebvre (Sopran), Ensemble Leviathan, Lucile Tessier (Fagott & Leitung)
Music of darkness
At the time of Louis XIV and Louis XV, Leçons de Ténèbres were among the musical highlights during the night services of Holy Week, during which the church interior was further darkened after each leçon. In the settings by Delalande, Fiocco, and Pollio presented here, one can detect an increasing theatricality and the influence of the Italian style, which did not stop at the church at that time. With her Ensemble Léviathan, Lucile Tessier offers the melismas of soprano Eugénie Lefebvre a stage worthy of the royal chapel.
