The album "Compulsion!!!!!", recorded for Blue Note in 1965, is considered one of the boldest musical statements by pianist and composer Andrew Hill. On it, Hill attempted to view the avant-garde through the prism of jazz's roots in African rhythms. Accordingly, he used his piano more as a percussive and less as a melodic instrument in the four pieces he composed. He was accompanied by an ensemble of up to eight musicians, including two wind players, two percussionists, two bassists and a drummer. In a review of the album at the time, Billboard wrote: "Andrew Hill's fierce but disciplined piano is the driving force behind this idiosyncratic and moving record."
