In June 1901 Massenet became acquainted with the three-act comedy "Chérubin" by Francis de Croisset and fell in love with this material. Croisset and Cain worked out a libretto for him from it, which he set to music in 1903. Albert I of Monaco heard about it and arranged the premiere in February 1905 in his theater. The opera became a great success in Monaco and Paris, but proved short-lived. After performances in Antwerp, Brussels, Geneva and Magdeburg, the work fell into oblivion for several decades. So now to be rediscovered with a top-class cast on this DVD-Video.
