Herbert von Karajan described the playing of Rumanian pianist Dinu Lipatti as follows: "(...) it was no longer piano playing, but music that was absolutely free from gravity."The admiration that musicians and music lovers still hold for Lipatti ? even years after his premature death ? borders on the worship usually reserved for saints. The exceptional pianist died of cancer at the early age of 33 but during the few years he was able to give concerts he made a number of important recordings. The recordings on hand were made between 1937 and 1950 and give a good idea of his subtle and extraordinary art of interpretation. Several of these recordings are considered "recordings of a century" or have been labelled "unsurpassed" - including the Schumann Piano Concerto, the award-winning Chopin Waltzes and Johannes Brahms' Love Songs Waltzes for Four Hands recorded together with Nadia Boulanger. In addition this compilation contains all the pieces performed by Lipatti at his famous "last concert" in Besanç, where the severe illness had already left its mark on the pianist.
