Benjamin Britten, whose centinary we celebrate this year 2013, channeled his rejection of war and his abhorrence of fascism into his Violin Concerto op.15. The work, a landmark of the repertoire, is unbridled in its lyricism and constitutes a poignant commentary on the devastating brutality of the times. Almost seventy years after the Holocaust, overcome by the same concerns as Britten, composer Jonathan Berger also turned to a violin concerto, Jiyeh, to express his rejection of war, brutality, and inhumanity. Paired together, these works present musical reflections of a world gone mad - by composers whose aesthetic, while stylistically diverse, share a sensibility of lyricism and expressivity.
In these troubled times, it seems essential to focus on the most important things of life, That's why it appeared necessary to us to publish this album to raise one more voice against events that should never happen again. Livia Sohn, outstanding violinist who created the Berger Concerto in 2007, reveals these works as a call for peace, full of tenderness, hope and humanity.
