Claudio Monteverdi and Girolamo Frescobaldiwere two of the most influential musicalfigures in 17th-century Italy; while the former’sboundary-pushing madrigals, operas andsacred works changed the course ofBaroque vocal music irrevocably, the latterwas one of the first – and most prominent– composers to devote serious attentionto composing for the keyboard.This new recording celebrates the influencethat these two composers continue to exertover performers and audiences today – andthe fascination that their music inspires –through a selection of motets and instrumentalpieces, performed with precisionand authority by Il Pegaso and MaurizioCroci. Of particular interest are a handfulof new discoveries: three Marian antiphonsby Monteverdi, preserved in a music printheld at the Biblioteka Uniwersytecka inWroclaw, Poland, and pieces drawn from arecently-unearthed notebook of Frescobaldi’s,including early stages of extant works.With the addition of several better knowncompositions, this intriguing collectionilluminates some less familiar aspects ofboth composers’ oeuvres, and places recentmusicological discoveries within reach oflisteners. In their debut recording, the newensemble Il Pegaso, led by Maurizio Croci,deliver performances invested with passionand expertise.
