The importance of Álvaro Cassuto for Portuguese cultural life in the last half century is immense. An eminent composer and conductor (his music can be heard on jpc 3624756), he had already won the Koussevitzky Prize at Tanglewood when he was appointed Deputy Music Director of the Lisbon Radio Orchestra in 1970. This album focuses on the three orchestras he founded in the years that followed, all of which set new standards for musical quality in Portugal. The performances show how he revolutionized the standards of orchestral musicianship in his country with a variety of repertoire and personally led the revival of the music of Joly Braga Santos.
