In 1663, a terrible plague epidemic decimated the city of Hamburg. Among its victims were the wife and many friends,and colleagues of the city's leading composer, Matthias Weckmann. These tragic events inspired him to writevisionary settings of biblical texts evoking images of desolation and destruction, but also struggle and hope.
