Pauline Viardot is undoubtedly the only composer to have composed arias to French, Italian, Spanish, German and Russian texts – five languages which she spoke fluently. Better known for her dazzling career as an opera singer than the works she composed, people begged her to settle in Russia during her tours there – to no avail. We do still have a remarkable anthology of over forty arias set to texts by some of the greatest Russian writers: Pushkin, Turgenev, Lermontov, Tyutchev, Fet and many others. Her melodic feeling and imagination were ideally suited to the Russian language. The highly original accompaniments and sound inventions in which we discern the excellence of this pianist, a student of Liszt, make this into a discovery which never could have taken place had it not been for Laurent Martin’s patient research into these arias. They were mostly untraceable but were finally unearthed in the possession of an avid collector. The fruit of this meticulous work which has made a representative selection possible (including a large majority of pieces never recorded before) is the unique programme he invites us to discover…
