Pergolesi began composing operas at the age of 21, shortly after completing his studies at the Conservatory of the Poveri di Gesù Cristo. in 1731 he received a commission from the Teatro di San Bartolomeo for his debut opera "La Salustia". However, the premiere had to be postponed due to unforeseen complications. Pergolesi had tailored the role of Marziano to the castrato Nicolò Grmaldi, who died shortly before the premiere. There were considerable changes to the version originally intended by Pergolesi: since the castrato who had stepped in to replace Grimaldi was still very young, the role of Marziano was now sung by a tenor. The 17-year-old Nicolo Gizzi finally interpreted the role of Claudio as a soprano, for which a tenor had previously been designated

Both versions are still extant today and were performed at the Pergolesi Festival in Jesi in 2008 and 2011. The Blu-ray disc is based on a production from 2011, this is the subsequently adapted version. Baritone Vittorio Prato is featured in the role of Marziano and is accompanied by soprano Maria Hinojosa Montenegro as Claudio.
