The reason why Francesco Geminiani is not mentioned in the same breath as the other greats of the musical Baroque today cannot really be explained. Along with Corelli and Handel, it was he who made a career in 18th century Britain. Concerto Köln has not forgotten him; on the contrary, it reveres him as one of the greats. The ensemble chose its personal favourites from various parts of his oeuvre: Geminiani's quintessence. These are the works "which we consider to be the most beautiful and successful compositions", says bassoonist Lorenzo Alpert. The fact that Geminiani left behind a large number of technical and interpretational teaching documents was also decisive for their interpretation."These rich sources of information have enabled us to use many a surprising and unusual stylistic element in the interpretation of his Concerti Grossi," Alpert says. "They have led to this special and very personal "Quinta Essentia"."
