Vaclav Luks and his ensembles Collegium 1704 and Collegium Vocale 1704 have been the custodians of Jan Dismas Zelenka for two decades. Now his solemn "Missa Circumcisionis" is being published for the Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord in the Temple, today known as Epiphany. It is one of the most extensive and richly orchestrated of the composer's 20 or so mass compositions, written in 1728 when Zelenka stood in for the ailing Dresden Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen. The Missa Corporis Domini, which was composed around ten years later for a less important occasion and is therefore only scored for strings and oboes, is also performed.
