Although the 1844 premiere at La Fenice was not favored by singerly indispositions, audiences and critics quickly warmed to the work. The opera contains some of Verdi's most successful and impressive arias and is a milestone in the development of dramatic structure, increasingly dispensing with closed numbers. The production here was created with some of the best singers currently available for this genre.
