Recorded in Perugia between 2023and 2025, a major new set ofSchumann’s song output for mixedvoices: vocal duets, trios andquartets. By a fine team of Italiansingers, and led by the pianist FilippoFarinelli. In recording previous, adventuroussurveys of the songs and chambermusic by Ravel, Berg, Dallapiccola,Hindemith and others, the pianistFilippo Farinelli has demonstratedhis deep knowledge of and affinityfor a wide range of chamber music. As he does here, he has gatheredtogether a carefully selected cast ofsingers in order to present both raritiesand established masterpieces withinthe catalogues of these composers, shedding new light on their evolutionas creative thinkers and musicians. The solo song output of RobertSchumann is well established amongthe peaks of the rich heritage ofGerman Lieder. But alongside cyclessuch as Dichterliebe and Frauen-liebeund-leben, Schumann often returnedto the combination of mixed voices, and these cycles are much less familiarto most listeners. Many of themcatch the composer at his most genialand Biedermeier in tone, such as thefemale Duets Op.43 and the Mädchenlieder Op.103.The Spanisches Liederspiel Op.74 andthe Spanische Liebeslieder Op.138are strikingly under-rated precursor toHugo Wolf’s Spanisches Liederbuch,in which a group of singers take turnstheir individual turns (in solo or duet)to outline ‘sketches of Spain’ from aGerman perspective (and from one whohad never been there), full of charmand grace. The Op.79 Liederalbum für die Jugendlikewise reminds us of Schumann’sgenius for song-melody at its mostartless, a vocal counterpart to pianocycles such as Kinderszenen. The poet Emanuel Geibel hadadapted many of the ‘Spanish’ texts, and Schumann’s Op.29 trio of songsbased on texts by Geibel catch theauthentic spirit of the German wanderer. Here and elsewhere throughout theset we find Schumann’s affinity for theworld of fantasy and fairy tale.Lieder collectors will find this new setan essential acquisition, but anyonenew to Schumann’s song writing willfind much to delight them.
