Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony explodes the boundaries of symphonic form in a globe-spanning gesture, striking an unusually hymn-like, unbrokenly positive tone. Riccardo Chailly is one of the most convinced interpreters of this work, and so in many respects it seemed fitting that he chose it in the summer of 2016 to take up his position as the new principal conductor of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, succeeding Claudio Abbado. The artistic statement was combined with a deeply personal one: It was to be a "tribute to Claudio," the highly esteemed friend and colleague to whom Chailly, as he repeatedly emphasizes, owes much, especially in his engagement with the œuvre of Gustav Mahler. Thus, on August 12, 2016, Claudio Abbado's unfinished Mahler cycle was completed with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in a breathtaking performance of the Eighth, at the same time heralding a new era in Lucerne.
