Henri Dutilleux, named as “van Gogh of classical music” (Die Welt), has for much of his artistic life been a maverick, dreamy and stubborn man, looking for his own style between tradition and modernism orientated to his great paragons Dukas, Ravel and Roussel. This colourful music eventually led to all-too-late success and tributes to his compositions, especially his orchestral works. This CD offers the rarely performed 1st Symphony, the two nearly unknown orchestral songs on poems by Jean Cassou, and finally the much better known Métaboles.
“The baritone Paul Armin Edelmann here delivers powerful and mostly accurate performances, holding his own in the first of these against some vivid brass writing” BBC Music Magazine
