This program is composed by the main forms of the Italian Renaissance organ music, found in the so-called Manoscritto di Castell’Arquato, one of the earliest and most important collections of Italian keyboard music from the first half of the 16th century. It contains ricercari, mass movements, magnificat, motets, chansons, dances and madrigal intabulations.
This recording presents three composers active in the 16th century: Claudio Veggio, Rocco Rodio and Sperindio Bertolo. Their Canzones and Ricercatas are intabulations (instrumental arrangements) of well-known chansons. The polyphonic structure of the vocal models is intabulated and elaborated with «passaggi» which tend to be concentrated for the most part in the upper voice.
Played on The Lorenzo da Prato Organ at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna (Italy). The organ “in cornu Epistulae” (Epistle side) is built by Lorenzo di Giacomo da Prato in 1471-75 and Giovanni Battista Facchetti in 1531.
Organist Luca Scandali is one of Italy’s foremost scholars and keyboard players. For Brilliant Classics he recorded the complete organ works by C.P.E. Bach (nominated for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik), Galuppi, Pasquini, Pellegrini and Padovano.
