One of the most revered arrangers in jazz history, Gil Evans is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Miles Davis, but has also released numerous albums of his own. SVENGALI (an anagram of his name) features the Canadian-born pianist leading an ensemble through a half-dozen live performances recorded in New York City in the summer of 1973. Evans' wide-ranging musical interests and masterful balance between acoustic and electronic instruments are on full display here, from versions of old favorites like "Summertime" and "Blues In Orbit" to two pieces penned by saxophonist Billy Harper (these performances also featured a young David Sanborn on saxophone).
