Gaetano Donizetti was one of themost distinguished Italian composersof the first half of the 19th century. Atthat time, opera was the preeminentmusical genre in Italy, and many topcomposers based their careerson it. Unlike his contemporaryItalian opera composers, though,Gaetano Donizetti also devoted hisart to chamber music, producing agood number of excellent works.Between 1814 and 1821, he wrote anumber of interesting compositionsthat included both obligato clarinet ortwo clarinets in C, as well as demandingparts for basset horn. The voices ofsoprano and tenor are involved, even ina duet (Aria De Torrente). This album isindebted to Nico Bertelli for his researchand publications concerning classicaland early romantic arias with clarinet,and to Italian researcher Adriano Amore.Giuseppe Donizetti (a.k.a. DonizettiPasha) was Gaetano Donizetti’s olderbrother. He was a talented child andreceived lessons from Simon Mayr, thesame teacher as his brother. In 1825,he became music master of an Austrianregiment stationed in Italy. In 1831, theTurkish sultan asked him to form themilitary band of his empire along theCentral European lines. He managedto win great esteem and favour fromthe sultan, transferring the musicalstyle of Italian music to the shores ofthe Bosporus with great success.He died in Constantinople on 12February 1856. Giuseppe Donizettiwrote a large amount of music formilitary bands in many differentcombinations, but only a few of thoseworks reached his homeland.
