In 1932, at the age of 18, Benjamin Britten discovered the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. His fascination was more with the psychoanalytical than the metaphysical dimension of the story. However, it took Britten more than 20 years to adapt the literary model for the opera. He takes the theme of the loss of childhood as an opportunity to explore the troubling and tortuous paths of the human subconscious. Completed in record time (March to July 1954) to a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, the composition is considered one of his finest works.
