Winner of the York Early Music International Young Artists Competition 2024, Trio Ayres Extemporae makes its debut on Linn Records with a program that explores the diverse timbres and textures that arise from the group's unusual instrumentation of violin, five-string cello and cello. "Erbarme dich!" represents a spiritual journey from agony to redemption, centered around instrumental transcriptions of arias and sonatas by J. S. Bach and interwoven with the expressive depth of works by Biber and Locke. It is a profound reflection on these universal themes, tracing the entire spectrum of human emotions - from anger, guilt or remorse to acceptance and ultimately peace. The aria from the cantata BWV 55 gives this program its name: a plea for mercy of touching vulnerability that signals the beginning of the journey to absolution.
