Polish-born composer Marta Ptaszynska studied with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen and has worked in the United States since 1972, establishing cultural links between the two countries. Ptaszynska has composed in all major genres and collaborated with many leading musicians and ensembles. Her harmonies are often refined and transparent, with an expressive intensity created by contrasts. The orchestral works on this albumillustrate her gift for creating evocative atmospheres. The Concerto Grosso, dedicated to and premiered by Yehudi Menuhin, explores baroque archetypes.
