In contrast to the Whole Consort, in which instruments of the same instrument family play together, and which in England was mainly reserved for viols, the so-called Broken Consort consists of various plucked, stringed, and wind instruments. Thomas Morley's First Book of Consort Lessons was also intended for this type of instrumentation. The ensemble La Caccia plays Morley's music in an instrumentation that not only beautifully brings out the colorfulness of English Renaissance music, but also emphasizes the immediate joy of playing this music.
