The vast heritage of Spanish traditional music lies at the heart of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca's works. Both men relied heavily on the great flamenco artists of their day: the 'Canciones españolas antiguas' (Old Spanish songs) were recorded for the first time in 1931 by the dancer and singer Encarnación López, ‘La Argentinita’, accompanied on the piano by Lorca himself. It was the great flamenco singer and dancer Pastora Imperio, daughter of the legendary Rosario ‘La Mejorana’, who suggested to Falla and María Martínez Sierra that they might write the music and libretto, respectively, of 'El amor brujo'.

We experience the same thrilling confrontation with tradition here in these performances by two internationally famous Spanish artists: one a flamenco singer, the other a classical pianist. This album is the result of their first encounter!

  • Falla: El Amor Brujo
  • Falla: Siete Canciones populares españolas
  • Lorca: Canciónes (13) españolas antiguas
