Composer Howard Hanson's intention to write music that would be "young in spirit, lyrical and romantic in temperament" was fully fulfilled in 1930 with the completion of his passionate Symphony No. 2. This work, which is probably - not least because of its use in the film "Alien" - his best-known and most popular, often reminds us of Sibelius with its horn fanfares and the powerful yet lyrical string section. Hanson, the son of Swedish immigrants, has never completely lost sight of this connection to his Northern European origins and the musical tradition associated with them
Gerhard Schwarz, who has recorded numerous highly acclaimed CDs for Naxos, leads the listener from one musical resolution to the next in Hanson's "Romantic" with an astonishing feeling for gradual increases, thus awakening ever-increasing expectations
