Joachim Raff moved in circles that included Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann and eventually became one of the best-known German composers of his time. Of Raff's six stage works, Dame Kobold ("The Phantom Woman") was the first in a series of comic operas that anticipated later trends, moving away from Wagnerian pathos and harking back to the lightness of Rossini. The opera is admired for its beautiful musical design and is characterized by a disarmingly simple but fast-paced plot, enchanting solos and elegantly flowing melodies as well as a cleverly coordinated combination of language and music.
