The Moments musicaux by Schubert and Rachmaninov represent two different approaches to one and the same musical concept. For Schubert, they embody an intimate form in which simplicity and poetry unfold in short and elegant pieces. The six miniatures he composed in 1827 alternate between lyrical melodies and sombre atmospheres, like a homage to the transience of time. Rachmaninov, on the other hand, takes up the form with dramatic intensity and dazzling virtuosity. His pieces, composed in 1896, reflect the influence of Tchaikovsky and the Slavic tradition.
