The Livre de musique d'Église by Alexandre de Villeneuve, rediscovered after centuries of oblivion, reveals a hidden gem of the Baroque sacred repertoire. Among other things, the Leçons de Ténèbres, written for a solo voice and basso continuo, reflect the elegance and dramatic intensity of 18th century French church music. Under the direction of gambist Ronald Martin Alonso, the Ensemble Vedado brings the works to new life. Alternating with instrumental pieces, the album brings to light the spiritual depth and harmonic richness of a little-known composer.
