The oratorio by Alessandro Scarlatti is an exciting drama about life and death - and love. The plot of the unknown librettist is based on the martyrdom of Saint Theodora (Teodosia) from Tyre, who unconditionally confesses her faith in the Christians persecuted at the time and is executed in the cruellest way by the Roman governor of Caesarea, Urbanus, in return. The libretto also features Arsenius, the governor's son, who falls in love with Theodora (who, however, has dedicated herself solely to heavenly love) and tries in vain to save her from death, as well as his confidant Decius. Theodora died in 308 AD at the age of 18.
