Quartetto Adorno
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco began to concentrate on composing chamber music in the late 1920s. The String Quartet No. 1 in G major dates from this period, offering a rural panorama with rustic serenades and processional themes reminiscent of a village festival. The return to a greatly changed Italy after the Second World War inevitably triggered mixed feelings in the composer - the String Quartet No. 2 in F minor reflects this through dissonance and restlessness, although dancing rhythms hint at optimistic tones. His final quartet, No. 3 in F major 'Casa al Dono', is an effortless fantasy, lively and at times ecclesiastical, inspired by memories of his homeland and the friendships he had enjoyed.
