Florence Price had a deep love of literature and set poems by poets of the Harlem Renaissance as well as Lord Byron and Robert Frost, among others. Her greatest choral work is Abraham Lincoln "Walks at Midnight", a setting of a poem published in 1914 in which Lincoln views the modern world with dismay. The chorale-like passages and the fugal finale, combined with their use of spirituals, lend the cantata a thoughtful, sometimes introspective grandeur. "Song of Hope", based on a text by Price himself, is an emotional prayer that is also related to spirituals. Charming smaller pieces dedicated to nature and two spiritual works round out the album. John Jeter has been music director and conductor of the Fort Smith Symphony since 1997. He is the recipient of numerous American awards. Jeter has guest conducted numerous orchestras in the USA and Europe. His music education programs for schools reach up to 10,000 students annually. He specializes in the music of Florence Price. The Malmö Opera Orchestra performs, supported by the Malmö Opera Chorus. Sara Swietlicki, Lindsay Grace Johnson and Jonas Samuelsson sing the solo parts.
