On November 29, 2012, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and thus the Vienna Musikverein celebrated its 200th birthday with a very special concert: a reconstruction of the first concert in 1812, this time conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. As then, the program included Timotheus oder Die Gewalt der Musik, the German version of Handel's Alexander's Feast in an arrangement by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which he had written for Baron van Swieten in 1790. To ensure that it sounded exactly as it did in 1812, Concentus Musicus and the Singverein mustered a total of around 200 performers. They were joined by Roberta Invernizzi, Werner Güra and Gerald Finley, three first-class soloists, and at the end Harnoncourt even had the audience sing along: "The black dots - those are the notes."A very special concert, then, documented by Sony Classical with this live recording from November 29, 2012, and according to the press "a true triumph" (Die Presse), "a hymn to the 'power of music' conducted excellently and with dramatic aplomb by Harnoncourt" (Kurier).
