In Mozart's time, today's vocal registers were not yet established. Women were sopranos, castrati were castrati, and Mozart wrote for personalities and vocal colors and not for abstract voice types. Leaving aside modern categories, a female singer in Mozart's works can cover a whole range of expressive and dramatic possibilities and take on the roles of many different characters, including those Mozart intended for castrato voices. Together with Stephan MacLeod and his ensemble Gli Angeli Genève, mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti demonstrates the diversity and versatility of Mozart's vocal music.
